I have fond memories as six year old of those hot summer days when the school dinner breaks seemed to last for hours, and of playing simple games with the innocence that only a child can enjoy (it was the 1960's, think Call The Midwife); with the girls in their summer dresses and us boys in our grey flannel shorts (a left over from WW2) a perennial favourite was,'What's The Time Mr Wolf'. A ridiculously simple game at which we all did our best to avoid the wolf's hungry jaws; the person playing wolf would name a time when asked and the other children would dare themselves to get closer and closer, until that is, the answer was, dinner time! At which point the group would scatter with squeals and taunts of, "you can't catch" me as the wolf did his or her best to apprehend a victim.
The secret to What's The Time Mr Wolf, is to guess when the wolf would call dinner; in real life the consequences for not knowing the time can be considerably worse than a sticky hand on your shoulder. The main problem I see as I work with people, is the failure to appreciate the importance of the time it is now.
I am not talking about time management, though that has its place, rather the realisation that right now is really important. If we were to make up a game called "What's The Time Mr Coach", I would answer, "It's action time". I can almost hear the eye balls rolling as people read this, but again and again I see my wonderful clients enjoy significant change through this simple truth.
The only way we will see the results we say we want in the future will come about, is if we start taking steps to bring them about now. No matter what it is we want, we have to design a strategy and start. If our diet starts tomorrow we won't lose any weight, if we want the benefits of exercise, but always plan to start next week, we will remain unfit. The sales person who plans to speak to people another day is the one who won't make the sale.
What time is it in your world? In two years time, what would you like to see in your life that isn't there now? No matter what it is, it is time to start, results never come from wanting, only action.
What will you do today to deliver what you want tomorrow?
Go well my friend.
